Understanding Your Emotions

What emotions are for, why stress and worry take over, and practical, evidence-based ways to handle them.

For anyone who wants to understand their own reactions better and handle hard feelings with more skill. Twelve short lessons draw on mainstream psychology: how emotions work in the body and mind, stress, worry, anger and low mood, and the skills that help, from naming feelings to reframing thoughts. This is education, not therapy, and it says when to get professional help.

By the end you can

How emotions work

What emotions are for, the loop between body, thought and action, and naming what you feel.

  1. What emotions are for

Emotions are fast signals that get you ready to act. Learn what the main ones are for, and why a feeling is information, not an order.

  2. The loop of body, thought and action

What you think, what you feel, what your body does and what you do all feed each other. Learn to map the loop and find the easiest place to step in.

  3. Naming what you feel

Putting a precise word to a feeling can take some of its heat away. Learn to go from "I feel bad" to the actual emotion, and how naming differs from going round in circles.

Stress and worry

How stress works, why worry loops, and how to calm the body.

  1. How stress works

Stress is your body gearing up to meet a demand. Learn what happens inside you, why short bursts help but long ones wear you down, and how to match your coping to the problem.

  2. Why worry loops

Anxiety is fear aimed at the future, and worry is the mind trying to solve it in advance. Learn why avoidance and reassurance keep the loop running, and two simple ways to step out of it.

  3. Calming the body

When the alarm is ringing, it's hard to think straight, so start with the body. Learn slow breathing, grounding and muscle relaxation, and when each one fits.

Thoughts and feelings

Catch thinking traps, reframe them, and handle anger and low mood.

  1. Thinking traps

Some thoughts pour fuel on a feeling. Learn the most common thinking traps, catch the exact thought behind a mood, and tell a trap from a fair reading of the facts.

  2. Reframing a thought

Once you've caught a hot thought, you can test it. Learn to weigh the evidence, find a more balanced thought, and know when a problem needs solving rather than reframing.

  3. Anger and low mood

Two feelings that push you toward the wrong move: anger toward lashing out, low mood toward pulling back. Learn what each is for, a better move for each, and when to get help.

Living with emotions

Self-compassion, emotions in relationships, and your own toolkit, including when to get help.

  1. Self-compassion

How you talk to yourself after a mistake shapes what happens next. Learn the three parts of self-compassion, why it doesn't make you lazy, and a short practice for hard moments.

  2. Emotions in relationships

Feelings spread between people, and a hard conversation can go well or badly in the first minute. Learn to raise a complaint gently, validate someone's feelings, and pause when you're flooded.

  3. Your emotional toolkit

Put the whole course together: a simple order for hard moments, a personal if-then plan, the everyday basics under every skill, and clear signs that it's time to get professional help.
