Human Body Basics
How the body you live in actually works, from one cell to the whole team, in animated diagrams you step through one frame at a time.
For anyone who has a body and was never quite shown how it runs. No biology background needed. You start with a single cell and build up: bones and muscles, the heart and blood, the lungs, digestion, the kidneys, the immune system, nerves and the brain, and hormones, and every lesson has an animated diagram you step through. You finish able to follow one breath of oxygen from the air to a working muscle, and to explain what your body does when you run for a bus. This is general education, not medical advice: for anything about your own health, talk to a doctor.
By the end you can
- Explain how cells, tissues, organs and systems fit together, and what a cell does with food and oxygen
- Follow blood through the heart, lungs and body, and say what arteries, veins and capillaries each do
- Describe what digestion, the kidneys and the immune system each do with what comes into the body
- Tell how nerves and hormones carry messages, and explain how the systems work together when you exercise
What you're made of
- The cell: your smallest living part
What a cell is, the few parts almost every cell has, and what a cell does with food and oxygen to get energy.
- From cells to systems
How cells team up into tissues, tissues into organs, and organs into the systems this course walks through one by one.
- Bones and muscles: the frame that moves
What bones do besides hold you up, why muscles can only pull, and how pairs of muscles bend and straighten a joint.
Oxygen in, around and out
- The heart: a double pump
The heart's four chambers, the two circuits they pump, and what the valves and the "lub-dub" are doing.
- Blood and vessels: the delivery network
What blood is made of, the difference between arteries, veins and capillaries, and where the real delivery happens.
- Lungs and breathing
How the diaphragm pulls air in, the path air takes to hundreds of millions of tiny air sacs, and how oxygen and carbon dioxide swap places there.
Fuel, filters and defence
- Digestion: from plate to cell
The trip food takes through the gut, what each stop does to it, and where the useful parts finally get into the blood.
- The kidneys: your blood's filters
How two fist-sized organs filter all your blood many times a day, keep what you need, and send the rest out as urine.
- The immune system: defence and memory
The barriers that keep germs out, the fast general response when they get in, and the slower targeted one that remembers them, which is how vaccines work.
Control and teamwork
- Nerves and the brain
How a nerve cell carries a signal, how signals cross the gap to the next cell, what a reflex is, and which parts of the brain do what.
- Hormones: the slow messengers
How glands send chemical messages through the blood, how insulin and glucagon keep blood sugar steady, and what adrenaline does in a hurry.
- Running for the bus: how it all works together
One short sprint followed through every system in the course, from the first signal in your brain to getting your breath back, and the habits that keep the team strong.
